Today I would like to discuss the significance of newspaper. There is none. Easy enough right? I wish it were. The big newspapers of the past are slowly but surely going into irrelavence. In todays society we are able to gain our news faster, more conviently and without killing trees and staining our fingers black from that god forsaken ink. Let's be honest. By the time the paper is printed, shipped and eventually purchased, is it even news anymore? Most of the time by the time it hits the newsstands the story has either changed, evolved ,or expanded since the original report was published. The physical dimensions of the paper has changed also. However I do still like to see the little local papers like the Dundalk Eagle. The stories written in this paper are basically about Dundalk and For Dundalk. It is geared toward its audience that reads it. The people of Dundalk. It's only $.50 and contains interesting tid-bits and ads for Dundalk specifically.I think the quality of the writting can hold its own with other papers, in fact I like it because I consider it an easy read.I can go online and read big news stories in the Washington Post, New York Times and the USA Today from the comfort of my home, but I love Capt. Harveys cheesesteaks. So as I slide on down to get my grub on, I grab a cop of the Eagle and enjoy both together.. Isn't it a wonderful world we live in? The Dundalk Eagle will survive because the people of Dundalk care about the happenings of their hometown and want to see the positive and perhaps the negative side also. Besides the articles, they have ads for prominent businesses in Dundalk as well as reviews for their local sports teams as well. I think the Eagle will be around for a while..
I think the consensus is in, the local newspaper will survive because like you said, people of Dundalk care about the happenings of their hometown. I could care less about the national papers, like USA Today which I think the articles suck.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you related to the newspaper to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Its actually a good way to put it. I agree that the local news is more attention getting to me than national news in some cases.
ReplyDeleteSo true about the fact that printed news is already old news before it's delivered to your doorstep. In the information age where we get emails, texts and tweets at the speed of sound, a paper delivered by a dirty guy in a van (they just throw them out the window) is way too slow. Reading the paper is a ritual and tradition. I know family members who will still read the paper on Christmas morning if it falls on a Sunday. Tradition is why the Eagle will stay around.
ReplyDeleteBy the time that the paper is printed we will already have the news on our phone, twitter, or facebook page. The Eagle may survive but I more than sure they have expanded to facebook, twitter and some other online sources so people can have the same access as they do to the other papers
ReplyDelete"By the time the paper is printed, shipped and eventually purchased, is it even news anymore?" you make an excellent point, i totally agree with you. The timing on the news online is getting decrease which is very incredible, makes me rethink about buying the news paper if i know what i am about to see.
